Discrimination in America has existed since the creation of our nation. Our nation was founded on the hope of gaining something in the demise of something else. Slavery existed throughout our nation for hundreds of years. To own more than a tangible good, to want more than what the human mind can desire. Thus, we get terrible acts of greed and abominations such as slavery. It seems as if human rights and civil rights are being pushed further back to the side burner everyday. It's happening right before our eyes. A useless vote in a lame duck congress. Hope for the future? Everyday it's looking more and more a disaster. American civil rights were basically unheard of in the early 19th century. The uncivilized were given free rule to do as they pleased with the uncivilized. Fast forward a few hundred years later and now we are just following the uncivilized, in a civilized way. The false sense of power that they created exposed our culture to a toxic way of thinking. Some people like it toxic, even if it means alienating a whole entire population of the Earth. Is it Human nature? Was the human race destined to rise and conquer? Or be persecuted and vanquished by someone who comes along and says he's better than us? The rights of the people have been stomped on for years and years. Human rights activists have made great progress throughout history in changing the norms in terms of how some segments of the population are treated, even viewed by other countries.
We may never find the answer to how such things could have happened in our history. But isn't it our jobs to stop the history from repeating itself? Though just a small fight in the global human rights effort, the fight for LGBT rights is one that is being fought everyday on the American forefront.
It's interesting to see society from the perspective of 300 years ago. The same struggles, just a different world. It's really astonishing given the tools our civilization has had , that we have been able to overcome insurmountable odds against us as a race. So why is it that we still try to inflict harm to our own kind? That is why society in today’s civilization still has a lot of maturing, and much more overcoming to do. As an American Citizen, as a Citizen of a nation that was based off of the Constitution that once said that we had “unalienable rights”. Why are millions of men and women today being alienated by their own government? When you are not allowed to privately serve as a solider to your country unless you strip away a part of your self is at its core, alienating. But it's happening, and apparently our government wants it to keep happening. The failed attempt to repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell is just one telling sign that our government does not realize what kind of mess they are really in. When such a basic civil right, the right to serve for your country, is alienated on a cause that has no merit to even be noted within the law in the first place, but is used as fact and usually spewed in terms of hatred and bigotry.
Don't Ask Don't Tell was a failure from the start, it's roots were planted in some liberal, republican handshaking meetings. It was the gold mine civil rights victory of the decade. If anything, it has sped up the public’s awareness for the equality of LGBT people, or for these past few decades, the lack thereof.
D.A.D.T. Will for always be seen as a blemish to the right, To let this blind alienation happen like this to our own citizens without recourse to the ones who imposed it, the right. Such an ironic, iconic political party. Society is trying to admit it's mistakes and some of their shortcomings. One of which was denying LGBT people the right to serve openly as a citizen in their own military. That's why the right is being so firm to their “beliefs” . The right thinks that if LGBT people are allowed to openly serve in the military that it will be Vietnam all over again. As in, the people are getting rowdy lets start a war to quiet them down. Or lets start cracking down on their rights to free speech. Is it not clear what is going on in today's society?
The exploitation of the human being, with a twist. The twist is, that there is a twist. It's like we just expect our rights to be alienated just because someone said that they would not be alienated. There's billions of dollars involved across countries across continents. To be the United States of America, we have to “look” a certain way, and our military must appear to the outside world “a certain way” The truth is, we are not on very smooth sailings with a lot of countries right now. For the United States Government to even think of turning down someone from eligibility from enlisting because of one's sexual orientation is incomprehensible. That is why to me, it's an issue that's rooted much deeper than the hatred or religions that also may be named , or whatever is behind the hating of LGBT people. At it's core, Don't Ask Don't Tell is a human rights violation and because of that it should be repealed immediately. Federal courts have already started declaring this statute unconstitutional, and have instructed that there be no further enforcement of this policy.
What is holding our government back from doing the right thing? Our federal courts obviously agree that human rights are being violated. Why isn't our government following suit and adhering to their constitutional oath that they were sworn to serve and protect. That's why the liberal party of today is campaigning off of hope. At this point, that's all we the people have, hope. Hope that people in our government get their priorities straight, and to stop worrying about their own bottom line. We must change now, or forever will this moment be lost in history. A chance to better mother earth. A chance to better humanity. Why not take it? Allow LGBT people to openly serve in the military. It might not sit well with our traditions, but in the end we will see that it was the correct thing to do. When law ceases to be the dictator of history, evolution will start to take its course. Repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell might not mean a lot to the people who oppose it now, but someday, some historian will look back, and look at how a government managed to alienate so many of their people and get away with it. The liberal party says that there is still hope. I hope they're right..
